Excellent for Close-Up Work. The lens’s minimum focusing distance is just 11 inches (28cm) throughout its entire range of focal lengths, which makes it very useful for close-up work. All of the focusing and zooming action is done internally, with no changes in the lens’s size.

Sharp Image Quality. It’s a stop slower than the , but otherwise there’s very little difference between them. Some reviewers have found the 17-40 is actually sharper at the wide end, and it may be less prone to lens flare.

Like the , this is a less expensive “L” quality lens that has very good image quality. I prefer it to the for landscape and outdoor wide angle shots. It’s every bit as sharp, perhaps sharper, and more flare resistant. Plus it takes more reasonably priced 77mm filters. If you don’t need f/2.8, this is the wide angle lens of choice for full frame cameras in my opinion.

On a crop frame camera, the offers image quality nearly as good with added image stabilization. It’s a bit more “fragile” than the 17-40, though.
