This successor to the Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS is one of the best telephoto lenses available. It’s perfect for nature and sports photography. Key features include:
-
Improved image quality
-
Improved, four-stop image stabilization
-
Faster, more accurate autofocus
-
L-series build quality at a lighter weight
What’s New? The Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS II is significantly lighter in weight, has better image stabilization (four stops compared to two), and is a bit sharper (particularly in the corners) than its predecessor. It has a faster autofocus CPU with dedicated algorithms that significantly increase autofocusing speed and accuracy. There’s also a “power focusing” mode for video that focuses smoothly to a preset recall position.
Teleconverter Compatible. It remains quite sharp with and even .

There’s an old saying that the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. Canon’s second 300 f/2.8 IS lens certainly gets the cheese. It’s pricey. It’s more than most people need. But it’s probably the best telephoto lens ever made. I find it reasonably easy to hand hold for a while, at least, and with a pair of teleconverters it gives great images up to 600mm.
