Versatile Telephoto Zoom. Optimized for full-frame cameras, the Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS II’s zoom range makes it an ideal choice for a range of applications, including portraiture, vacation photography, and sports photography. It has a 3.3-foot minimum focusing distance at all zoom settings, which is quite nice for close-up work. Its constant f/4 aperture provides consistent performance throughout the zoom range, and its rounded nine-blade diaphragm gives you great depth-of-field control for selective focusing. Using an APS-C camera? You’ll have a focal length equivalent to 112-320mm.
Advanced Optics. This lens’s fifteen-group/twenty-element optical formula includes one fluorite element and two Ultra Low Dispersion elements that minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing while providing high clarity and color fidelity. Canon has applied a Super Spectra coating to the lens elements to further combat ghosting and flaring, even in harsh lighting.
Optical Image Stabilization. The 70-200 f/4’s built-in image stabilizer compensates for five stops of camera shake, so that you can shoot in lower light at slower shutter speeds without worry. It boasts three IS modes: a standard mode for single shots, a mode that only activates during the exposure, and a mode designed specifically for panning.
Ultrasonic Focusing Motor. This lens uses a ring-type Ultrasonic Motor to provide fast, accurate, and nearly silent autofocus performance for both still and video shooters. You also get full-time manual-focus override for precision adjustments. A focus-limiter switch constrains the lens’s focusing range for faster performance—you can select 3.3 feet to infinity or 9.8 feet to infinity.
High-Quality Build. This L-series 70-200 offers a more durable build than its predecessor, with improved weather sealing to help keep mother nature on the outside.
Teleconverter Compatible. The EF 70-200mm f/4L II is compatible with the and teleconverters, both of which are available as separate rental items.

Don’t confuse this with some “paint” upgrades. The IS II version of this lens is light years better than . It’s dramatically sharper at 70mm and remains noticeably sharper throughout the rest of the zoom range. The IS is better than the original version, too. This is not a close call. If you want to shoot a 70-200 f/4 IS lens, then this is absolutely worth the price difference.
As an aside, at f/4 this lens is sharper than the or is at f/2.8. If you stop the f/2.8 down to f/4 it’s a tiny bit better, but not much. So the bottom line is, if you’re out shooting things in bright sunlight, save some money and some weight. This lens is excellent and very few people realize how good it is.
