The Canon EF Extender 2x III is designed to provide extended range with Canon L-series telephoto lenses. Key features include:
-
Improved optical performance
-
Integrated processor
-
Fluorine coating on front and rear elements
High-Quality Optics. The Canon EF Extender 2x III features five groups/nine elements that ensure improved optical performance. All optical elements use Canon’s super-spectra coating, which reduces ghosting and flare to minimize post-processing requirements and a fluorine coating on the front and rear elements makes smudge marks much easier to clean.
Integrated Processor. The extender features an integrated processor which ensures all focusing, metering, and ID information is available. Canon claims that these extenders enable higher AF accuracy when combined with their range of premium Canon L-series lenses.

Like the Canon 1.4X TC III, the Canon 2X TC III is a great alternative if you need more reach with your compatible telephoto lens. While previous generations had a very noticeable effect on image quality and AF performance, the TC III is huge leap forward. Image quality and AF performance take a slight hit with the 2X, but it’s definitely not a dealbreaker. It’s really best to use on the Canon L-series superteles, but it can be used on the 70-200mm f/2.8L and IS II with good results. However, as a general rule, remember that low light does not mix well with teleconverters. You will see focus hunting.
