8.29MP 1-Inch CMOS Sensor and Dual DIGIC DV 6 Processors. The Canon XF405’s 8.29MP 1-inch CMOS sensor works in tandem with its dual DIGIC DV 6 image processors to capture UHD 4K footage at 60p, to produce Full HD fast- and slow-motion footage up to 120 fps, and to give you great image quality, even in low light. Its nine-blade aperture further enhances image quality by producing pleasing bokeh.
Canon 15x Zoom Lens. The integrated 15x optical zoom lens has a 35mm-equivalent zoom range of 25.5 to 382.5mm, and maintains UHD 4K quality throughout that zoom range.
Five-Axis Image Stabilization. The XF405 offers three image-stabilization modes. Standard mode gives you a constant stabilizing angle that’s independent of the zoom magnification. Dynamic mode is ideal for shooting while walking, as it extends the stabilizing range at the wide end of the focal length. Finally, Powered mode stabilizes the tele end’s low-frequency range, making it perfect for fixed-point shooting.
Dual-Pixel CMOS Autofocus. The dual-pixel CMOS system autofocuses quickly, quietly, and precisely, even when you’re shooting in UHD 4K, Full HD 120p, and other high frame rates. You can tap the camera’s touchscreen to select the focusing area, which is especially convenient when you’re using the Face-Detection AF mode.
Tilting EVF and Touchscreen LCD. The XF405 features a newly designed tilting 1.56m-dot electronic viewfinder and a large 3.5-inch 1.56m-dot touchscreen LCD, both of which make for easy image review. You can also use the touchscreen to easily access menu options and to control autofocus.
Mini HDMI 2.0 & 3G-SDI Output. While the XF405 can record 4K/60p internally in the MP4 format, sometimes you need more. The XF405’s mini-HDMI 2.0 terminal outputs the full 4K/60p signal for external recording in a format of your choice, depending on recorder used. Additionally, the XF405 includes a 3G-SDI terminal that outputs up to a Full HD 1080/60p signal for a professional multi-camera workflow.
Additional Features. You can use the XF405’s dual SD card slots for simultaneous or relay recording in MP4 format. You get built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for file sharing and remote camera control, four audio channels, and two XLR inputs. ND is built-in, and its three filter stages can be swapped with buttons on the side of the lens. The detachable handle is easy to install and includes a range of controls, a mic holder, an IR lamp, a tally light, and a cold-shoe mount. The camera is powered by Canon’s compact and lightweight .

If you want to break into the news world, this is a good place to start. Fairly lightweight, it has all the options the other Canon camcorders have. It’s very similar to its predecessor, the XF400, with the addition of SDI. It’s a decent little low-budget doc camera or b-roll camera meant to accompany a C200. The DPAF is great for small spaces where large cine lenses and follow focuses would be in the way. The tracking focus area can be customized and moved throughout the frame using the touchscreen, which is great for novice users. It is better in low light than most other similarly sized camcorders thanks to its slightly larger sensor. Unfortunately, the AF gets a little confused when zooming in and out, keeping it square in the prosumer category, not ENG.
