The Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro is a very nice “all-around” prime lens. Key features include:

Versatile 1:1 Macro. Although the Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro doesn’t have the very wide aperture of some primes, f/2.8 is still more than adequate for most conditions. Its focal length is good for street shooting, full length portraits, and outdoor architectural shots. It also acts as a true 1:1 macro lens that’s suitable for close-up work.

Small, Lightweight Build. It’s small and lightweight so it doesn’t take up much room in your bag, and it’s inexpensive so it doesn’t take up a lot of room in your budget.

Personally, I find short focal-length macro lenses difficult to work with because you have to get so close to the subject. But at this price, with the superb image quality this lens has, it’s really a compelling lens for anyone shooting a DX camera. Heck, it’s even weather sealed. Even if you don’t really want to shoot macros, this is a great little lens.
