Excellent Image Quality in a Compact Build. The Nikon 85mm f/1.8G AF-S’s reduced size and weight make it easy to keep in your bag at all times, yet it still offers fantastic image quality. The f/1.8 aperture allows for smooth background blur and subject isolation, making this lens perfect for portraiture. It’s compatible with both FX and DX cameras, including those without autofocus motors in-camera (such as the D3100 and D5100).
Fast, Silent Autofocus. This lens has full-time manual focus for easy adjustment, as well as a dedicated AF/MF switch for quickly changing to full manual focus. It’s great for video as well, using Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor to provide fast, silent autofocus.

Canon shooters talk about the Canon ‘Holy Trinity’ of prime lenses. Nikon does them one better. Nikon has the Holy Trinity of Excellent but Inexpensive prime lenses. The 85 f/1.8 G is the longest of those. Very reasonably priced but still with superb image quality in a small enough lens you can put it in a jacket pocket just in case you need a fast prime.
Superb as a long portrait lens, a short indoor sports lens, fast enough to use at a wedding reception, and really quite excellent as a long street and walk-around lens. This one I recommend without reservations.
