New Nikon Z System. The Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 S was designed specifically for cameras in Nikonās new full-frame Z-mount system. Z-mount lenses only work with Z-mount cameras, such as the and , and Z-mount cameras are only natively compatible with Z-mount lenses.
Semi-Wide Prime. The 35mm focal length is a popular choice for just about any type of photography. Itās used often for portraiture, landscape, and street photography.
High-Quality Optics. The Nikon 35mm f/1.8ās nine-group/eleven-element optical design features two extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements to promote sharpness and color rendering while limiting chromatic aberrations. Nikon has applied Nano Crystal and Super Integrated coatings to the elements to combat ghosting and lens flare, even when youāre working in bright or backlit conditions.
Fast Aperture. The f/1.8 aperture allows a high degree of subject/background isolation desired for portraiture. It also enables the lens to be very useful for low-light shooting. The nine rounded aperture blades contribute to smooth bokeh.
Stepping Motor Autofocus System. The stepping motor allows for fast, silent, and smooth operation. Pairing a speedy AF system together with a continuous manual mechanism allows you to hit your focus with confidence, while the internal-focusing design means that the lens maintains its length during focusing.
Durable Build. This lensās durable, moisture-resistant construction means you can use it in adverse conditions without worry. The exposed elements have a fluorine coating to protect them from debris and smearing. A programmable control ring lets you adjust manual focus, aperture, or exposure compensation.

To be clear, Iām not a 35mm focal length fan. Iām not an f/1.8 fan, I appreciate the difference an f/1.4 aperture makes, although sometimes the size difference is worth it. This lens is slightly smaller than most 35mm f1/4. lenses, but not nearly āput in your pocketā small, which is what Iām generally hoping for in an f/1.8 or f/2 prime. For those reasons, Iām not excited about this lens for my personal shooting. It does, however, have a few things going for it. First of all, itās quite sharp, weather resistant, quiet, and quick to focus. Second of all, if youāre going to shoot a Z at this moment in time, well f/1.8 is as fast as you get.
One thing I should be clear about, though: if youāre going to shoot a Z, youāre going to prefer this lens to shooting a non-Z Nikon 35mm f1.4 or f/1.8 on an adapter. Itās better.
