The RED DSMC2 GEMINI 5K S35 Brain is a cinema-quality, modular camera brain featuring a 5K, Super 35, dual-ISO sensor for improved sensitivity in low-light conditions. This version is housed in a new unified DSMC2 brain. Key features include:

What’s New? RED cites “better data rates and REDCODE settings” in the DSMC2 Gemini, but in practice, this does not change options for resolution, frame rate, or REDCODE compression from the previous Epic-W Gemini 5K S35 brain. Barring future firmware that further distinguishes the two, this is a change in name only.

New 5K, Super 35 CMOS Sensor. The RED DSMC2 GEMINI 5K S35 Brain introduces a new dual-sensitivity sensor capable of recording high frame rate footage in REDCODE RAW at up to 96fps with a reported 16.5 stops of dynamic range. Cropping the sensor to 2K allows for video frame rates to be extended to 300fps. The sensor measures 35.61mm diagonally and renders 15.4 megapixels of resolution for a slightly wider field-of-view when compared to previous Helium and Dragon sensors.

Dual ISO Sensitivity. RED joins Panasonic in offering a sensor with the ability to operate in two different sensitivity modes. Use the standard ISO 800 mode to preserve every bit of detail in brightly lit scenarios, or switch to low-light mode to render less noise and more shadow detail in exchange for a slight clipping of highlights at ISO 3200.

High Data Rates. The DSMC2 GEMINI can handle 300 MB/s transfer rates, which allows you to record REDCODE RAW files at the highest quality while also recording ProRes and DNx proxy files in 422 HQ, 422, and 422 LT at 4K resolutions. 4K ProRes and DNx files maintain full sensor readout with no cropping.

Greater Versatility. The new DSMC2 unified brains feature the DSMC2 Interchangeable OLPF system. This means that you can optimize your footage for your environment by swapping out the optical low pass filter. We send the DSMC2 Standard OLPF installed for balanced shooting, but we also rent the and as add-ons.

Semi-Backwards Compatible. A fully redesigned brain also means support for some components/accessories has been dropped. Any RED component labeled DSMC2 is fully compatible, and we include the DSMC2 Lemo A Adapter to retain compatibility with original DSMC Touch LCD monitors.
