The Sony FE 28mm f/2 is a full-frame E-mount lens designed for the Sony a7-series cameras. Key features include:
-
Excellent for landscape, street, and event photography
-
Fast, nearly silent autofocus performance
-
Nine elements in eight groups
-
Nine-blade rounded aperture
Full Frame E-mount. As a part of the FE line of lenses, the FE 28 is designed to cover the full-frame sensors on Sony a7-series cameras. Since it’s an E-mount lens, it’s also fully compatible with APS-C NEX cameras.
Wide-Angle Prime. When used on a full-frame camera, this lens provides a wide focal length that’s great for landscape, street, and event photography. With an APS-C sensor camera, you’ll have a semi-wide/normal range focal length of about 42mm. The fast f/2 aperture enables decent low-light shooting.
Internal Focusing. The lens remains the same size while it’s focusing. The non-rotating front element enables this lens to use polarizing filters. The linear focusing motor enables fast, nearly silent autofocus.
Optics. The eight group/nine element optical formula includes three aspherical elements that minimize spherical aberrations, and two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements that combat chromatic aberrations and maximize contrast. The ED elements feature multi-coatings that reduce flare and ghosting.
Optional Conversion Lenses. There are two optional conversion lenses designed specifically for the FE 28mm f/2. First, there’s the , which provides a 180º field of view while still covering a full-frame sensor. There’s also the , which widens the field of view to 92º while still covering full-frame sensors. Each of these conversion lenses expands the FE 28mm f/2’s functionality with minimal image degradation.

Take: The Sony 28mm f/2 is a really good budget option if you’re looking to get your feet wet in the Sony mirrorless system. It’s not the sharpest lens in the corners; you’re going to see some vignetting at wide apertures, and it’s definitely meant to have the distortion electronically corrected. Still, for casual users who just want a solid, inexpensive option, this is going to do the trick.
