The Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA Distagon is a full-frame E-mount lens designed for the Sony a7-series cameras. Key features include:
-
Excellent for landscape, street, and portrait photography
-
Fast, accurate, and nearly silent autofocus
-
Great depth-of-field control and low-light shooting
-
Nine-blade rounded aperture
Full Frame E-mount. As a part of the FE line of lenses, the 35mm f/1.4 is designed to cover the Sony a7-series cameras full-frame sensors. Since it’s an E-mount lens, it’s also fully compatible with APS-C NEX cameras.
Moderately Wide Angle. When used on a full-frame camera, this lens provides a moderately wide focal length that’s great for landscape, street, and portrait photography. With an APS-C sensor camera, you’ll have a normal range focal length of about 53mm. The fast f/1.4 aperture enables great low-light shooting and shallow depth-of-field control.
Direct-Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor Autofocus System. This internal-focusing system uses piezoelectric elements oscillating at ultrasonic frequencies to provide fast, highly accurate, and nearly silent autofocus performance that’s great for still and video use.
Advanced Optics. The FE 35mm f/1.4 uses a total of four aspherical elements to minimize spherical aberrations while reducing the lens’s size and weight. The Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating eliminates lens flare and ghosting while providing the famous high micro-contrast Zeiss look. The lens’s rounded nine-blade aperture diaphragm gives images smooth out-of-focus areas when you desire a shallow depth of field.
High Build Quality. Like the , the FE 35mm offers dust- and moisture-resistant sealing for use in less-than-ideal conditions. The all-metal barrel and smooth, responsive manual-focus ring give this lens a solid feel. The manual aperture ring allows you to disengage click stops for smooth aperture adjustment when shooting video.

Take: This is a really good lens from Sony if you can get around the size. The image quality is amazing and the build is solid. One feature that I like and other people will too is the ability to switch from clicked to de-clicked apertures. This is especially handy for people who shoot both photo and video in the same job on the same system.

Take: This is my go-to lens for any Sony full-frame cameras. It’s a quick and sharp lens with a solid build. Overall, it’s a great lens but not Sony’s best lens.
