Full-Frame E-mount. As a part of the FE line of lenses, the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS is designed to cover the full-frame sensors on Sony a7-series cameras. Since it’s an E-mount lens, it’s also fully compatible with APS-C NEX cameras.
Fast-Aperture Telephoto Zoom. When used on a full-frame camera, the FE 70-200 GM provides a fast-aperture, portrait to short tele focal range that’s perfect for sports photography and other fast-action, low-light shooting. Using an APS-C sensor camera? You’ll have a focal length equivalent to 105-300mm. The fast f/2.8 aperture offers shallow depth-of-field capability, as well as allowing you to keep shooting even in low light.
Steady Stabilization. An Optical SteadyShot Mode switch lets you choose between two image-stabilization options: general image stabilization, which is suited to most types of shooting, and a higher setting specifically intended for use with panning movements.
Direct-Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor Autofocus System. This internal-focusing system uses piezoelectric elements oscillating at ultrasonic frequencies to provide fast, highly accurate, and nearly silent autofocus performance that’s great for still and video use.
G-Master Series Quality. The GM series is Sony’s premium lens offering. What sets it apart from other Sony lenses is an emphasis on an extremely high resolving power of fifty lines per mm, out-of-focus “bokeh” quality, and a robust, weather-sealed body.
Advanced Optics. The FE 70-200 GM features three aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements—including one “XA” extreme aspherical element and one Super ED element—for minimizing chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range, and for producing clear, high-contrast images. The lens’s rounded eleven-blade aperture diaphragm gives images smooth out-of-focus areas when you desire a shallow depth of field.

This is the top of the line 70-200 for Sony, but it’s unfortunately a little lackluster compared to other brands. If you absolutely need f/2.8, for sports and such, this is still your best option since native lenses always focus better than adapted lenses. Just don’t expect the same optical quality as the or . There’s a lot of copy-to-copy variation, too. Just something to be aware of.
