What’s New? The Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 marks a slight update over its predecessor, the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC. Most notably, you get an upgraded five-stop vibration compensation system with two modes; a faster and more precise autofocus system; and protective eBAND, BBAR, and fluorine coatings.
Normal-Range Zoom. With full-frame sensor coverage, this lens’s 24-70mm focal length is the go-to for portrait, wedding, and event photography. It covers the wide to short tele focal lengths to give you the most flexibility while still maximizing image quality and speed. You can also use this lens on DX cameras, on which it’ll provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal-length range.
Improved Vibration Compensation. The upgraded in-lens stabilizer helps to eliminate camera shake when shooting handheld. It’s rated for up to five stops of correction and features two modes. Mode 1 is promotes a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results, making it a great balanced setting for general use. Mode 2 is specifically designed for panning motions.
Fast Aperture. The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is consistently bright throughout the zoom range and useful in a range of lighting conditions, including low light. The nine rounded aperture blades contribute to smooth bokeh.
Updated USD Autofocus System. The updated Ultrasonic Silent Drive motor allows for fast, silent operation. Pairing a speedy AF system together with a continuous manual mechanism allows you to hit your focus with confidence.
High-Quality Optics. The Tamron SP 24-70 f/2.8 Di VC USD G2’s twelve-group/seventeen-element optical design features three low-dispersion elements, three aspherical elements, one hybrid aspherical element, and two extra refractive index elements to promote sharpness and color rendering while limiting chromatic aberrations. Tamron has applied eBAND and BBAR coatings to the elements to combat ghosting and lens flare, even when you’re working in backlit conditions.
Durable Build. This lens’s durable, moisture-resistant construction means you can use it in adverse conditions without worry. The front lens has a fluorine coating to protect it from debris and smearing.

Optically it’s identical to the original version of this lens, still 17 elements in 12 groups (the image used for the lens diagram on Tamron’s own site is the exact same image for both lenses). Don’t expect this lens to be any sharper than the previous version, despite claims to the contrary. We haven’t seen any optical improvement. But there are lots of other things to like about this upgrade. The lens features new coatings that offer additional flare and ghosting resistance, a more rugged “moisture-resistant” construction (please do not take this to mean it’s weather sealed—even Tamron doesn’t use this terminology), a locking hood, and improved AF and VC performance. It can also be used on Tamron’s TAP-in USB dock for firmware updating and fine adjustments to AF and VC. The Nikon version of this lens also features an electromagnetic diaphragm system for more consistent shot-to-shot exposure.
