The Zeiss ZM 35mm f/2 Biogon for Leica is an extremely compact wide-aperture lens. Key features include:
-
Advanced optical design for high-quality images
-
Great for photojournalism and street photography
-
Smooth manual focusing
-
Ten-blade curved aperture
Solid Image Quality. This lens offers solid image quality and great color warmth across the frame. Its ten-blade curved aperture makes for smooth out-of-focus highlights. Its flare resistance and lack of geometric distortion provide useful accuracy for photojournalism and street photography. It produces a bit more distortion than some lenses, so it may not be quite as good for architectural work. This focal length isn’t particularly suited to that work, anyway.
High-Quality Build. An all-metal lens housing gives the ZM 35mm f/2 Biogon a premium feel. Its manual focus ring offers precision focus adjustment and excellent speed.

This can be a very good, and very cost-effective alternative to the Leica 35mm lens offerings. First, the lens works best if you choose the “35mm Summicron pre asph” option from the selection menu (thank you, Steve Huff): without that, it vignettes rather significantly. Properly set up, it’s quite sharp (not quite as sharp, perhaps, as the Leica 35s, but very close). It renders colors a bit warmer than the Leica, too, which I prefer for landscape and street shooting. And this lens has about the least distortion of anything ever. Virtually nil.
